A 27-year-old Ohio inmate just convinced a judge to lock him up longer. Kenneth Newton stunned Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge R. Scott Krichbaum on Monday by asking for an 18-month sentence instead of the 12 months outlined in a plea deal, reports WKBN. "I've gotta tell you, I've never heard that before," Krichbaum said. "I've never had anybody ask for more time. This isn't like an April Fools' joke or anything like that?"
Newton had pleaded guilty to two fourth-degree felony assault charges and a misdemeanor aggravated menacing count tied to a Feb. 6 incident, in which prosecutors say he bit two deputies while being escorted to an elevator at the county jail. He told the court he wanted the extra months so he could participate in additional vocational and counseling programs in prison. Krichbaum granted the request, and the term is expected to be served consecutively to a separate two- to three-year sentence Newton received earlier this year for a felonious assault.
