Serena Williams remains one of the biggest names in tennis, but a string of injuries and the irresistible attraction of off-court activities sent the 25-year-old phenom's ranking plummeting to 140th just a year ago. Now, as she preps for the US Open—and an awards show, a party, and a photo shoot—she invites the Times along for the ride.

She's back in the top 10, but tennis is just one aspect of Williams' life. After a difficult stretch marked by professional struggles and personal tragedy, she's keeping her options open, and not complaining about—or cutting back on—non-tennis activities. She compares her schedule to a rock star's and says, "My life is like this every day, all day."
