Waterfalls are a prime tourist destination, and for good reason. Travel + Leisure runs down a list of the “world’s most spectacular,” but check before you go. Visit in the wrong season and you’ll see just a trickle. And dams can turn off the spectacle in a second.
- Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe: Even the mist clouds create "a natural spectacle."
- Angel Falls, Venezuela: The "undisputed tallest waterfall in the world" is visible only after a long slog to a viewing point.
- Waihilau Falls, Hawaii: The 2,600-foot drop amid lush greenery is awesome, but the hike to see it requires an overnight.
- Niagara Falls: The drops is only 167 feet, but the sheer breadth of the falls—3,000 feet—makes them a thunderous joy.
- Havasu Falls, Ariz.: The Indian-owned oasis offers a great drop into a "mineral-rich" pool at 70 degrees, but call ahead: Visitors are limited.
- Mardalsfossen, Norway: To see one of Europe's tallest drops, and the biggest in Norway, visit when the hydroelectric dam is off.
