Despite a record that was 19 games (now 20) below .500 and put them 13.5 behind the division-leading Brewers, the Pirates used the day of the trading deadline to buy rather than sell—the kind of contender's move they haven't made since 1997. Pittsburgh traded outfield prospect Rajai Davis for grizzled righty Matt Morris.

The Pirates will pay Morris $13.5 million through the end of 2008. Morris won 22 games with the Cardinals in 2002 but has depreciated since, going 7-7 thus far for the Giants. Asked if Davis could become a starter for San Francisco, the Giants GM merely laughed, adding, "Come on. Let's go on to some other questions."
