Britney Spears' DUI case has been resolved. A lawyer for the 44-year-old singer appeared in a Ventura County courtroom Monday and entered a guilty plea on her behalf to a lesser charge known in California as "wet reckless," a vehicle code violation tied to alcohol or drugs. In exchange, prosecutors dropped the misdemeanor DUI count stemming from her March 4 traffic stop, when she was pulled over on suspicion of impaired driving; authorities have not said what substance was involved. Spears was sentenced to a year of probation and a single day in jail, already credited as time served, reports NBC News.
She must see a psychologist weekly and a psychiatrist twice a month, and the New York Times adds she must also finish a three-month substance abuse program and pay a $571 fine. The judge warned that any DUI conviction within the next decade would be treated as a second DUI offense. The AP reports the county district attorney's office described the plea offer as a typical one for defendants with no DUI history, no crash or injury on the road, and a low blood-alcohol level.
The office added it's a particularly common result for defendants who have indicated they are seeking treatment for their issues, as Spears did when she voluntarily checked into a treatment facility in April. In a statement, attorney Michael Goldstein said Spears had "accepted responsibility" and made "significant steps" toward "positive change."
