President Trump has handed his vice president a new title: "fraud czar." The president said Friday that JD Vance will lead efforts to root out what Trump alleges is fraud involving federal social-welfare funds, with a particular emphasis on states led by Democrats, Reuters reports.

  • "Vice President JD Vance is now in charge of 'FRAUD' in the United States," Trump said in a Truth Social post. "It is massive and pervasive, and the job he will be doing, in conjunction with many great people within the Trump Administration, will be a major factor in how great the future of our Country will be. We will call him the 'FRAUD CZAR.'" He claimed that the "numbers are so large that, if successful, we would literally be able to balance our American Budget."

The assignment stems from an executive order Trump signed last month creating a national task force under Vance's leadership to pursue the president's long-running accusations that some states are misusing federal welfare dollars. Trump said Vance's focus would technically be "EVERYWHERE" but concentrated on California, Illinois, Minnesota, Maine, and New York. He said "raids have already started" in Los Angeles. In a post on X Thursday, Vance praised an operation that targeted health care and hospice fraud in the Los Angeles area, the Hill reports. "Our task force isn't wasting any time cracking down on fraud," Vance wrote.
