A South Jersey cheesesteak landmark is missing one of its stranger attractions. Donkey's Place in Camden, praised by Anthony Bourdain for serving what he called the best cheesesteak in the Philadelphia area, says someone walked off with the bar's beloved walrus penis bone, NJ.com reports.
Owner Rob Lucas Jr. says the antique walrus baculum—displayed behind the bar alongside a megalodon tooth and other curiosities—has been there for as long as he can remember and is a frequent conversation starter. Bartenders typically pass it to customers so they can guess what it is before revealing the answer. That backfired last week, Lucas says, when a customer allegedly took off with the bone after a bartender briefly stepped away. The bartender said the man was part of a group of three men who had been drinking for hours, the New York Post reports.
The bartender tells NBC10 that the three men left together, with one of them hiding the bone under a scarf. Security cameras captured an image of the suspected thief, and the restaurant says the man even paid by credit card. Still, staff haven't reached out to him and don't plan to involve law enforcement. "We didn't want to file a police report or anything like that," Lucas says. "We just want the thing back."
