"After two years of suffering, he is here," says the family of Evyatar David, 24, in a statement cited by the BBC. "We did not give up faith, we did not lose hope," says the family of Bar Kupershtein, 23. Those two men were among the 20 hostages freed by Hamas on Monday, a move that set off jubilation in Israel.

  • The released hostages range in age from 21 to 48, and the New York Times has short bios of them all. Two are fraternal twins—Gali and Ziv Berman, age 28.
  • The Guardian has a photo gallery of some of the reunions taking place.

  • Two hostages whose fates were uncertain were confirmed to be dead on Monday, per CBS News. They are Tamir Nimrodi, 20, and Bipin Joshi, 24.
  • The Hostages and Missing Families Forum says Hamas released the remains of only four deceased hostages on Monday and is demanding the immediate return of two dozen others, per NBC News. The outlet notes that concerns were raised whether Hamas would be able to locate all the remains amid the widespread destruction in Gaza.
