The payment company Toast is out with new data on the world of restaurants, and it finds that people in Delaware are the best tippers in the nation. Diners there drop an average tip of 22.1%, reports the Hill. California, meanwhile, brings up the rear at 17.3%. Here are the top five most generous tipping states, according to a map at Toast:

  1. Delaware, 22.1%
  2. West Virginia, 21%
  3. New Hampshire, 20.9%
  4. Indiana, 20.7%
  5. Ohio, 20.6%

  • The national average in the first quarter of the year was 19.4% at full-service restaurants, up a tick from 19.3% the previous quarter, per Axios. Both figures are down from the high of 19.9% reached in the pandemic.
  • The average tip at quick-service eateries remained at 15.8%.
