Those aspiring to keep up with the Joneses in one of the wealthiest towns in America will need a hefty paycheck—one that's often more than the average household income in said towns, reports Voronoi. GOBankingRates first pulled out all smaller cities with populations between 5,000 and 10,000 people, then shook out the 50 with the highest average household income. The site also compiled typical home values in each city and the lowest salary one could earn to comfortably own a home at that price. The Florida town of Palm Beach came in at No. 1 on the list, with an average household income of $366,000, but a $2.3 million salary required to afford a home there. The rest of the list is California-heavy:
- Palm Beach, Florida: average household income $366,000; salary needed to afford a home is $2.3 million
- Atherton, California: $595,000; $1.5 million
- Los Altos Hills, California: $460,000; $1.12 million
- Montecito, California: $327,000; $1.1 million
- Hillsborough, California: $540,000; $1 million
- Los Altos, California: $400,000; $851,000
- Saratoga, California: $329,000; $771,000
- Woodside, California: $446,000; $728,000
- Paradise Valley, Arizona: $386,000; $683,000
