Bush's Gravestone Bears a Simple Inscription

Texas A&M says the private, graveside service for George HW Bush's family members has ended and the former president has been buried. Thursday evening's ceremony concludes days of funeral activities honoring the 41st president, the AP reports. After lying in state at the US Capitol and a funeral at Washington's National Cathedral, Bush had a funeral at the Houston church where his family worshiped. His remains then rode on a special funeral train to College Station, where he was buried at his presidential library at Texas A&M University.

Prior to the closed service, about 2,100 cadets in dress uniforms lined the road to the graveside and saluted as the motorcade passed, the AP reports. In a salute to the World War II Navy pilot, Navy fighter jets roared overhead in an unprecedented 21-aircraft flight in the "missing man" formation, followed by a 21-gun cannon salute on the ground, reports KTRK. At the private service "Taps" was played and "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," a Navy hymn, was sung, ABC reports. His headstone had the only inscription he wanted: His Navy ID number, and the words: "He loved Barbara very much." (More George HW Bush stories.)
