Politics | Barack Obama Really? Obama Listens to Nicki Minaj? Pop-culture shoutouts have gotten ridiculous in this campaign By Kevin Spak Posted Oct 16, 2012 1:35 PM CDT Copied President Obama, in the back seat wearing headphones, departs Marine Corps Base Hawaii, in Kaneohe, Hawaii, by motorcade, Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010. (AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster) Frank Bruni thinks he's caught President Obama in a lie, but to prove it, somebody has to subpoena his iPod. On Friday, Obama said he occasionally listened to Nicki Minaj—who once called the administration "lazy bitches." But Obama had been asked to weigh in on the Minaj/Mariah Carey dispute, and wanted to praise both artists. "While Mitt Romney is on multiple sides of a single issue, Obama is on all sides of iTunes," Bruni quips in the New York Times. If it seems weird that someone would ask Obama that, remember that he's been on The View five times. "This presidential election will go down as the one in which the pop-culture pander reached its ludicrous apotheosis," Bruni predicts. Politicians once wanted to show how serious they were; now Mitt Romney pretends he loves Snooki's "spark-plug personality." Clearly, politicians believe this is the kind of stuff America wants to see. "I'm not sure if that says more about them, or about us." Read Bruni's full column here.
