Thousands Protest Egypt Violence

It’s Friday, and you know what that means in Egypt: A massive protest following morning prayers. Today saw thousands gather in Tahrir Square, decrying both the military’s protracted rule, and its violent response to recent protests, which left 17 dead, and produced one particularly horrific YouTube video. Protests are also raging in other cities, including Suez and Alexandria, al-Jazeera reports.

In Cairo, a few hundred people also gathered for a competing rally supporting the military. “What will be interesting will be to see how the security forces deal with these protesters in comparison to those in Tahrir,” says one al-Jazeera correspondent. “Many people point to how there is a double standard.”
