Republicans call it a partisan campaign speech By John Johnson Posted Apr 13, 2011 4:26 PM CDT Copied House Republican leaders meet reporters on Capitol Hill: John Boehner, Eric Cantor, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite) A sampling of Republican reaction to President Obama's budget speech today, from USA Today and Politico: Paul Ryan: He called it "excessively partisan, dramatically inaccurate, and hopelessly inadequate" in getting the nation's debt under control. It was "a political broadside from our campaigner in chief." Jeb Hensarling: "I missed lunch for this?" asked the House GOP conference chairman. The speech was too skimpy on deficit-cutting details and more about "winning the next election" than "winning the future." Mitt Romney: "Instead of supporting spending cuts that lead to real deficit reduction and true reform of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, the president dug deep into his liberal playbook for ‘solutions’ highlighted by higher taxes." Haley Barbour: “President Obama doesn't get it. The fear of higher taxes tomorrow hurts job creation today." Click for more on the speech, including the transcript.
